Use the navigation at the top to learn everything you need to know about the explosives in Crysis 3!
In this section, we'll take a look at the handheld and launched explosives you can use in Crysis 3's competitive multiplayer mode. Explosives are available on every class and should be used appropriately. Let's take a look at each of them and some good uses for them outside of 'chucking aimlessly' and 'fragging noobs'.

In Crysis 3, each class consists of several customizable categories. These include:
- Primary Weapon
- Secondary Weapon
- Explosives
- Nanosuit Modules
For the purpose of this guide, we're focusing on explosives so go aheaed and ignore all those other things.
Explosives come in many forms but they all have one thing in common; they explode. Sometimes smoke comes out, sometimes your enemies are blinded but always there is an explosion of some sort and usually your target ends up dead not long after. Every explosive has a different purpose and function, so without further ado let's take a look at them.

M17 Frag Grenade

Frag grenades are a staple in first-person shooters just as much as assault rifles or a trusty sidearm. Every shooter worth its salt includes explosives, incendiaries and tactical grenades of some sort and the world is a better place for it.
In Crysis 3, the most fundamental of all of these explosives is the M17 Fragmentation Grenade or, simply, the frag. If you're unsure on which explosive you should go with, choose the M17 because you really can't go wrong. Contrary to popular opinion, grenades are meant for a hell of a lot more than just throwing as far as possible, hoping to get a kill. No, sir, these babies have a purpose and the sooner you use it for that purpose the better.
Imagine this scenario:
You're playing Crash Site and the team has three of its best players crowded around the pod. They are consistently ripping your team apart when you approach the downed pod, making it impossible for you to capture it. You can either A) continue approaching the pod and dying, over and over, or B) activate Stealth as you approach, pull out your M17 frag grenade and toss it towards the heart of the downed pod.
They are either going to scatter or get killed, either way it is a win for your team. As they flee like roaches from the light you can pick them off, one by one, before moving in to recapture the pod for your team.

M34 Flash Bang

The M43 Flash Bang is a tactical grenade available in Crysis 3 that emits a very loud explosion and blinding light when deployed. Toss into rooms where you know enemies are holed up to make things interesting before you breach. For maximum effect, yell 'breaching!' before you storm in, rifle placed decisively on your shoulder.
Flash bangs are a good option for any class, but there are a few important things to remember when using them.
First, they do not do any relevant damage to your target. Yes, there is a bit of a hit when the flash bang detonates but it is negligible at best. Second, the effects of the flash bang are not exclusive to your opponents. If you are in the blast radius, unshielded by cover, prepare to be blinded. We can't count the number of humiliating deaths we've met by blinding ourselves with a flash bang, only to have an enemy come up from the other direction - perfectly unblinded - and take us down while we flounder helplessly.

M18 Smoke Grenade

When it comes to tactical grenades, the smoke grenade really gets left in the dust (pun intended). This is the least used tactical item, without question, but it definitely has a place in any good first-person shooter and Crysis 3 is no exception.
What more is there to say, really? Pull the pin, throw the grenade and smoke happens. It's pretty straightforward, but let's take a look at when to use the smoke grenade.
In our experience, the best (and really only) use for the smoke grenade is to create a screen to cover the movements or actions of your team. If you're planning on making a run into the downed pod in Crash Site, pop smoke in the capture area before your squad rushes in. Then just cross your fingers that nobody chucks a frag grenade in there because a little willy pete isn't going to stop that.

M19 EMP Grenade

EMP grenades are brand new to Crysis 3, but not to shooters in general, and the function here is the same as you've seen in other games. In modern or futuristic shooters, so much of your equipment is powered with internal electronics and the EMP grenade serves to disable that capability.
When deployed, the EMP grenade detonates a small, isolated electromagnetic pulse that disables all electronics in the nearby vicinity. This means that things like laser sights will not function for a time, but more damaging is the affect it has on your Nanosuit energy. Just about everything your character does requires energy from the Nanosuit, so things like power jumping, mantling, sprinting, air stomping and more draws on a finite amount of energy.
When the EMP hits you, that energy is gone, making things very difficult for you indeed.

R.E.X. Remote Explosive

R.E.X. is Crysis 3's version of a classic C4 remote explosive. The premise here is simple, chuck the R.E.X. away from you or plant it somewhere and retreat before giving your opponent a fiery surprise when you detonate it.
Plenty of players use R.E.X. explosives as a close range grenade of sorts, deploying it towards an enemy while they're on the move and quickly detonating it. It's up to you if you think this tactic will work for you, but we personally prefer to place it near an objective and detonate it when the opposing team moves in to capture. Remember, this isn't a Claymore or some other proximity explosive so you're in charge of pressing the clacker.
The R.E.X. is the most powerful explosive device in Crysis 3, matched only by the JAW rocket launcher.

JAW Launcher

The JAW is the most powerful explosive device in Crysis 3, matched in damage only by the R.E.X. remote explosives. The JAW, however, is a rocket launcher as opposed to a hand thrown device like the R.E.X. or frag grenade.
If you're playing objective modes, the JAW can be a great way to clear out capture zones before moving your team in. With all of the vertical areas in Crysis 3 maps, it is not hard to find an area above the capture zone where you can get a good shot off from your JAW before air stomping the rest of the stragglers before you capture the point. Of course, it's also there if you just want cheap easy guaranteed kills in regular deathmatch.
There really isn't any drawback to using the JAW. It's exceptionally powerful and has a much greater range over the frag grenade or R.E.X.
