I think FC3 is closer to Red Dead than GTA4, and I enjoyed the heck out Red Dead. GTA4 is way too story driven, and you're right - it really ruins the doing-whatever-the-hell-you-want theory of these types of games.
Here's to hoping Rock Star Games can pull through with GTA5!
