Battlefield 3: Armored Kill Tank Superiority Mode Detailed

DICE has revealed some details surrounding Tank Superiority mode in the upcoming Battlefield 3: Armored Kill DLC expansion pack due out next month.

Tank Superiority is basically exactly what you would expect if you played Battlefield 1943. This game mode features Battle Tanks and the new Tank Destroyers, battling for control of a single capture point on the map. Tank Superiority will be playable on every map in Armored Kill. Vehicle respawns in Tank Superiority are basically instantaneous as you don't want to have to wait for a tank to spawn in a game mode where everyone else has one.

"With Tank Superiority I wanted to push tank-based gameplay to the extreme. This means there are a lot of new ideas to adapt to in this game mode," Said Lead Designer, Gustav Halling, adding, "As a general rule, great tank commanders will make sure to travel in “wolf packs”, as lone tanks are easily picked off by well-positioned enemy tank squads. It’s important to use the new Tank Destroyer class to its advantage by constantly being on the move to become a harder target to hit."

A video I found on gamespot with a bit more information and a tiny look at the map "Armored Shield".

So it turns out that infantry will still be in this game mode... The map also looks like Caspian Border as I originally imagined it before release.

At least we are about to see some decent sized maps at last

People surmise what the winning strategy will be for this dlc, one thing I've  learned is if you let people loose on a big map, they will surprise you.

I for one can't wait to get hold of armoured kill myself and not just for the armour

Wow, actually looking forward to this...

It really does look like a step in the right direction. But still, there's only so much that can be done unless entire mechanics are rewrote or omitted (mainly the attatchements/unlock system that's been discussed already).

It is looking like armoured kill may not be Battlefield at it's finest but it should at least be Battlefield 3 at it's best. For all that's worth.

Thats a pretty good quote! I thank that big question though is, is this worth $15 for those who did not buy premium?

I'm gonna buy this one, don't care about Premium and CQC or Urban shit (we have Seine Crossing, Operation Metro, Gran Bazaar, Tehran Highway, etc I don't need one of those with different themes).  That is it :)

what's with this completely random comments order?

anyway, this game mode looks VERY promising. could be great fun.

the only problem i see is the tank vehicle attachments. everyone is going to pick the gay ones, the ones which, if you don't pick them, you're at a serious disadvantage - everyone will be running around with smoke, guided shell, reactive armour... i want to play a game mode where everyone is equal, and it is only down to skill.

but it would be quite easy to make being an infantry man out of bounds - i'm pretty sure they will make it like that, this is a tank game mode, tanks versus tanks, not just a vehicle heavily tank focused game mode. it would totally screw things up if there were soflams and javelins everywhere, as well as tanks with 4 engis behind them non-stop repairing. you should have to get back to bases, back into bounds, to be able to get out and repair.

The order of comments drives me up the wall.  I'd also like to play a mode where everyone is equal, no silly perks unlocked.  BF2 tank battles were great for that.  Now we've CODified even the vehicle combat.  *sigh*

This is one of the many reasons why vehicle unlocks just dont work. Especially the way that BF3 did it. Im gonna second your *sigh*

Im liking that screenshot. Obviously its a Armored Kill map right? Kinda looks like BC2 Heavy Metal, BF3 Caspian Border, and BC2 Harvest day all in one except of course larger.

Tank Superiority doesn't sound like that much fun once you play it a dozen times.

I think if these maps are well planned out it will make Tank Superiority more interesting.

    LOL ^^

This sounds like a great game mode (its also COMPLETELY un-original as Ive played this 10 years ago but thats besides the point), but I wonder how well this is going to work with BF3. With such simplicity and limited variability it seems fairly easy to see that one strategy will eventually be the ONLY strategy that is a viable option. I dont expect soflams to be to much of an issue as smoke defeats it pretty easily, and Im sure everyone will be packing smoke in this game mode.

Is anyone else COMPLETELY disappointed with the tank killer so far? I mean an IFV with a matched MBT cannon? Really? Using speed as an asset? Im sorry but do tank shells travel at 20 MPH? I can hit a heli with an MBT pretty easy, im pretty damn sure I can hit and IFV....... This gun should be twice as powerful as an MBT (for the games sake), with incredibly thick frontal armor, very poor maneuverability and VERY poor armor on the sides and rear. THATS a tank killer.

Yeeees! Completely agreed with you...  there is lots of them: the AA vehicle takes 2 times longer than FAMAS to kill an infantry.  Start playing air vehicles DICE nerfed every air missiles, rockets and cannon's.  Playing MBT then DICE nerfed IFV to match MBT cannon.  And now we are on our knee...LOL!

BF3 without patch was satisfying from vehicle part ... today they are the only victim on Battlefield 3.  It's strange that DICE focus everything about infantry - giving players hundreds of weapons, tenths of skins and adding few customized stuff with Premium.  Our vehicle got nerfed almost twice much and people enjoy driving mindless slaughter (or camping) in open exposed field.  Now, with 16 tanks is going to be difficult from air vehicle part, you know.

I feel I want to add 3 extra vehicle in this dlc : B2 bomber, F15 twin seater jet and Apache heli.  Hope DICE will look at "kamikaze" air vehicles - the undrivable AC-130 will be next victim that.  New players see jet as big rocket, not plane anymore.

I see no mention of quads, jeeps or hummers to load with c4 and stuff into someones tankmobile.

By this time I was expecting to see a ring and a date, wth?

I'M GONNA KILL EVERYONE, OR (more like) DIE LOTS OF TIMES TRYING!

  • #1 RNCoetzee

So, M1A2 got desert skin and Stryker MGS got green skin on same team?  DICE is confusing us all :/

"Tank Superiority is a highly tailored game mode for Armored Kill where platoons featuring Main Battle Tanks and Tank Destroyers fight for control over a single flag – often placed in extremely open and hard-defended terrain. The new game mode resembles a “King of the Hill” struggle and is available on all four maps in Armored Kill, each map featuring a mix of up to 16 tanks."  quote from blogs.Battlefield.com

1 FLAG ?!?!  Expect 20 SOFLAM's aimed at it, vehicles smokes everywhere and 50 javelins in the sky...Sounds more like Derp Superiority!

i'm guessing that they make it tank spawn only and that you can't get out of it or something, just to make it fair and keep that what you said from happening. i hope that they do!!

I really doubt that they will make the game without an infantry possibility. Id bet alot of money on that
