Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

10 Things We'd Change About Black Ops 2 Multiplayer, Part 2

A couple weeks back, I took a look at some of the things that we would change in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2's competitive multiplayer mode. Don't get us wrong, we have been having a blast in Black Ops 2 multiplayer and have sunk an absurd amount of time into the game but there are some key things that we think could improve the overall experience quite handily.

In our first list, I listed five of the ten things that I would like to change. Just to recap, those were:

  • Spawn Protection
  • Knives
  • Lag Compensation
  • Explosive Damage
  • Flak Jacket/Tactical Mask

Without further ado, here are is part two of the list!

6. Movement speed

Movement speed is a tricky subject and hard for me to explain, but in general I would have to say that it’s simply too high. I don't care about realism in the least, so it’s not because I don't think the guys can carry all that stuff and move that fast. I’m talking balance in the multiplayer. Also, I play 99% on the PC so my view on this might be different than yours. Even with the added benefit of quick precision aiming people simply move too fast in this game. With a mouse and keyboard you see some things that you might only see in high end competitive play on the Xbox 360 or the PS3, it’s really hard to explain and I know I’m not doing it justice, if I happen to find an example that explains my point better I’ll be sure to edit this post and put a link here.

Suffice to say I would simply remove things like lightweight and reduce speed across the board by a flat rate, somewhere around 10%.

7. Recoil

I’m sure I’m in the minority when I say this, and after reading the the title of this you might think that I think recoil isn’t high enough. I’m actually of a different mindset. I feel it should be lowered on some guns. Keep in mind you're more than welcome to disagree with me, but I feel there isn't one decent assault rifle in this game, and I attribute that to the recoil in this game. I was a fan of the ACR in Modern Warfare 2. This is my list, but I know it’s a touchy subject so let’s move on.

8. Sound Whoring

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this term in the COD community, Sound Whoring is simple using sound to your advantage. Mostly attributed to using a headset, because it allows you to hear all the things that ‘should’ matter. As I mentioned in my first post with the first 5 I played a lot of Counter Strike: Source, and sound in that game is perfect, in my mind. Don’t get me wrong, sound in Black Ops 2 is awesome, but the useful sounds you hear are almost non-existent. Even in past games, footsteps have been significantly too low. In Black Ops 2 I would bump it by like 300-400%

9. Map Design

I don't know how much attention you pay to map design, each map feels different enough, but when you look at the layout you notice one big trend. Every single map except for Carrier and future DLC all follow the same pattern. You have 2 sides to every map, and 3 lanes between them. Of course there are smaller routes and connecting paths, but the overall flow of each map is the same. Not necessarily bad, but it’s something I noticed. Given the chance I would add more variety, looking forward to the DLC to see if this changes.

10. Spawns

The dreaded spawn system in Call of Duty, everyone seems to have a problem with it. Keep in mind that it’s different between the Infinity Ward and Treyarch titles. I don’t have a solution for this. there is no easy fix, if there was then I’m sure it would have been implemented. But there are a few smaller details related to spawns that should be addressed, and it could help with the issues everyone hates. As I mentioned before in my last 5, Spawn Protection from explosives: Not sure why it was removed, but dieing less often means that the spawns flip less often which means creating less scenarios where spawning near an enemy is the issue. Orbital VSAT...It’s a favorite of many, but I can’t tell you how wrong I think it is that it cannot be shot down. It translates into about a minute of destruction for the team that has it. No spawn is safe at that point.

I can’t say with any certainty what would be needed to make them better, and I don’t know what's been done in the past to try and make them better, I can only hope that one of the developers find the solution.

Anyway guys, these are just a few things that bother me and a couple suggestions on what could be done to improve and balance the multiplayer of Black Ops 2. This is all simply my opinion, I don't expect everyone to follow the same thought process. Be sure to leave a comment letting us know what you think of these topics. I’d like to hear how you guys view it and whether you think that they’re an issue.

If you have any suggestions about how to fix or change some of these things please let me know. Thanks for reading!

If I was in charge I would do something about Bouncing Bettie's.

I can definitely tell you that the recoil is one of the biggest issues I have with prestiging on Black Ops 2. Everytime I'm moving it's like a Veteran level AI bot is taking me out. NO RECOIL IS FOUND IN SHOTS!

The lack of ability to hear footsteps in this game frustrates me to no end, in all the other games that was key to my destruction of the other team. What's the point of having my $180.00 Tritton AX720s if it doesn't help me hear the enemy running up behind me?! In MW3 I could even hear people that had dead silence on with my sitrep pro on and now in this game NOTHING!? What gives treyarch? Please fix this MAJOR issue!

I don't hear enemy footsteps at all on the 360 version.  Would love to be able to hear someone stomping up the stairs behind me.
