When Treyarch announced the second DLC expansion Uprising for Black Ops 2, we had mixed feelings. On the one hand, the maps looked good and the Zombies experience seems unique but on the other, it was just the same old formula...again.
Activision has made it a habit to follow the tried and true formula with Black Ops DLC for both of these last two games; a handful of multiplayer maps and a new Zombies map.
Lather, rinse and repeat.
With Black Ops 2, call us naive, but we were hoping for something new. Is that what we've been given with Uprising? Let's take a look at the latest trailer for Mob of the Dead, the new Zombies experience and see what's new.
You can see the trailer at the bottom of this post and follow along while we dissect this new look at the DLC.
|Feature||Is It New?||Reason|
|All-star cast - Ray Liotta, Joe Pantoliano, Chazz Palminteri and Michael Madsen.||The Black Ops DLC Call of the Dead featured a star-studded cast of celebrities.|
|Mob theme, prohibition era||This is a brand new era for the Zombies experience.|
|Prison setting||To our knowledge, there are no prisons visited in Zombies prior to this.|
|Purgatory game mechanic||Details are unclear, but this mechanic will let the player spawn into the map after death, accessing new areas that living players might not be able to reach. You can see it at 1:34 in the trailer (we believe).|
|Purchasable traps||Traps are shown in the latest trailer at 1:43. These have been featured previously.|
|Blundergat wonder weapon||While the weapon itself is new, wonder weapons are not new to Zombies in general.|
|Insane flaming tomahawk||At 2:08 in the trailer below you can see an insane flaming tomahawk. This is new.|
|Perk disabling zombie||A new type of zombie appears in Mob of the Dead, who disables the perks-a-cola machines. This was done in previous Zombies maps, more or less.|
|Weapons from MP and SP carrying over to Zombies||While it's great to see new weapons in Zombies, these are not 'new' to the game, simply new to this mode. The AK-47 and Uzi are making their debut in Mob of the Dead.|
In Mob of the Dead, for the first time players can complete a side quest to actually 'beat' the map. Assembling a plane, players can actually escape Alcatraz and the zombie hordes. This is seen at 2:10 in the trailer below.
Note: We are not counting Grief mode in this analysis.
As you can see, there is a mix of new and old with Mob of the Dead. For our money, however, there is a hell of a lot more new than old and we're looking forward to seeing if Mob of the Dead can cash in on these early promises.
Stay tuned for our analysis of the four multiplayer maps that also feature in the upcoming Black Ops 2: Uprising DLC add-on.
