Call of Duty: Ghosts

Four Potential Storylines for Call of Duty: Ghosts

Earlier this week, Call of Duty: Ghosts was all but confirmed as the next entry into the massively popular Call of Duty franchise.

With the promise of a new game, and the hints that we have been given over the last few months, we've put together a few general story arcs that Infinity Ward might be working on with Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Chances are, this is not a totally fresh storyline as we have heard that at least one major character will be returning to Ghosts.

We could be miles off here, but speculation is part of what makes Call of Duty such an exciting prospect every year.

Note: this article will contain spoilers for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare story branch, you are warned.

Continuing Captain Price's Story

One of the first rumors we heard about the next Call of Duty game was that Billy Murray, the English actor who voiced Captain Price, would be returning to the series. Speaking to This is Xbox, Murray said, "Yeah, on Monday I am off to meet Infinity Ward about the next game, Modern Warfare 4, I’m doing work on the sequel to Modern Warfare 3, it carries straight on and I only ever appear in the Modern Warfare games…"

As we know, of the dynamic duo of Soap MacTavish and Captain Price, only Price made it through Modern Warfare 3 alive. So what comes next for him? Price doesn't seem like the kind of soldier to go into a quiet retirement on the beaches of some foreign island, so chances are he'd be itching to get back into the action in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

A viable storyline could be that a criminal mastermind appears and the good guys call on Captain Price for his assistance in taking him down before he can execute whatever crime he has in mind. One potential enemy could be Volk from Modern Warfare 3, who you will remember as the man responsible for the heinous biological crimes in Europe. His status is unknown at the end of the game.

Stay 'Frost'y

Derek 'Frost' Westbrook was one of the player characters in Modern Warfare 3, a part of the Delta Force squad alongside Sandman, Truck and Grinch. Throughout the course of Modern Warfare 3, the player is invested in Frost's storyline quite heavily, despite Frost being a completely new character to the series.

To us, this could be Infinity Ward foreshadowing the important role that Frost will play in coming games. As you may remember, Frost's allies are believed to be dead when the mine collapses in the mission Down the Rabbit Hole in Modern Warfare 3. Call of Duty: Ghosts may take place several years in the future, with Frost picking up the pieces of his life and career after losing so many friends in the previous conflict.

Frost would also be a viable character to replace Soap, in a way, learning from Captain Price who we believe will be making an appearance in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Exploring Nikolai Further

While Nikolai was never one of the most central characters in the Modern Warfare franchise, he has been involved with Price and Soap since the very beginning.

If you think about it, Nikolai saved their skins on more than one occasion from Call of Duty 4 all the way to Modern Warfare 3, so it is possible that we will learn a bit more about him in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Potential storylines could take place both before the Makarov situation and afterwards. We don't know much about Nikolai but he has been a stalwart companion to Soap and Price for so many years, there must be some backstory to that loyalty that Infinity Ward could explore in Ghosts.

As for the future, Price and Nikolai are the only remaining members of Task Force 141 who have not fallen in battle which supports the idea that both he and Captain Price may be returning in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Ghost Returns From the Dead

Ah, the best (and most unlikely) for last!

Simon 'Ghost' Riley was a character that rapidly became a cult favorite among Modern Warfare 2 fans. His trademark skull-patterned balaclava with unnecessarily badass sunglasses over it endeared Ghost to many Call of Duty players. Those players were undoubtedly heartbroken when Ghost came to his gruesome death at the hands of Commander Shepherd, who doused Ghost in gasoline and set him ablaze.

The odds of Ghost surviving that are minimal, but his name does seem to imply a return from the dead. The obvious connection here is the title; Call of Duty: Ghosts. But that seems a bit too obvious for our liking and as much as we would love to see Ghost return from the dead in Call of Duty: Ghosts, it doesn't seem very feasible.

There is potential, however, for this next Call of Duty story to take place before the Modern Warfare trilogy. Ghost was very much alive during those years and would make a great main protagonist.

Those are some of the theories we've put together - what are yours? Feel free to share them in the comments, no matter how ludicrous they may sounds. We just proposed a man coming back from the dead after being drenched in gasoline and burned alive, after all.

Guys! Ghost is NOT dead! Replay the mission! Ghost says at the beginning of the level, "Why do we have to wear these stupid fire proof vests?" he was wearing a fire proof vest so he didnt die! Only Roach did! Then when he got shot, it was in the shoulder! He didnt die guys! He is still alive! Did I make myself clear!?

You can see it's "Ghost" on the cover art of the game, pulling up his skull mask:) so maybe a story based on Ghost's early years before his apparent death, or his revival.

I don`t think that Ghost will return on the next game, if they call it Ghosts. My theory is, that it could be a prequel to MW Series, where a Special Force called Ghost would take its place. As we know from Ghost Recon Series there was special force that ``not exists`` and it would be a possible prequel of any MW game. And as the name ``Ghosts`` says, they have to act stealthy and being undetected so we could see a stealth based with low action COD for this year. @Nate Rios, that would be perfect and a fresh breath to the series.

Totally agree with you, it would be neat to see an origin story for some of the MW characters rather than another Modern Warfare game.

My guess is that this game will be a MW1 prequel with Ghost as the main character

I'd even go out on a limb and say in game 6 player campaign. 1 or more of the storylines characters may die and when that happens your story is done for the campaign. You then must spectate  the rest of the game to find out how it ends. So chose your character wisely.  With that said the game will be almost over anyway.  We need some sort of new shocking interactive storyline gamemode. Maybe in the options you can chose to have a generic no addressed character to show up and finish the game with so you don't feel left out. Bottomline we need innovation.

I'm with you all the way.

This could be their development mantra and I would be totally okay with that.

It's time for a fresh start with a fresh squad. Maybe some reference to older characters especially Ghost. The 6 player co ops team would be called Ghosts which are trained by Price. The name if the squad is in memory of Ghost. Beyond that the sky is the limit. I'd put this 20 years after MW3.  Maybe it's a new US civil war and another country is helping half the nation to fight the other half.   Anyway there is  reason why I don't write stories. 99 percent of the time I don't know what I am talking about.

The civil war scenario would be fascinating, if it was done well. Civil War II, with modern technology, drones and the like. Could be economic division, the poor vs the rich. The middle class would have to use guerilla tactics to defeat the better equipped private sector - could be amazing.
