A brand new CryEngine 3 mod has surfaced by the name of Venerance: Sigma Octanus IV, or more simply as just Venerance.
Any Crysis mod, powered by CryEngine 3, is going to get us excited but Venerance takes things to a totally new level. The singleplayer Crysis 2 total-conversion mod aims to merge the worlds of Halo and Crysis in one amazing experience. If you've followed Microsoft's Halo franchise over the past decade, you'll know that video games are only one medium that is used to tell the story. Another popular Halo medium is literature, and Venerance takes its inspiration from 'The Fall of Reach', a Halo novel by Eric Nylund.
Specifically, players in Venerance will be able to live out the events of chapters 19 through 22 in Nylund's novel. The team working on Venerance will be translating the on-ground events from The Fall of Reach into a playable game, filling in any gaps in lore with their own familiarity in Halo canon.
As stated on the official website for Venerance:
While this project is not (and likely can not be) subservient to Halo canon, we want to be very careful to make the game as plausible as possible while simultaneously making sure that as we interpret the extended Halo fiction, we add as much detail as possible. One simple example of this is an ammo pouch. In Halo 2, for example: when he reloads, the one MJOLNIR-wearing person visible to the player seemingly gets his next magazine for his weapon out of thin air. In Venerance, there will be magazines visible on the character model.
That is, perhaps, an oversimplified example of where we make an addition to the Halo universe as best we can, but it should get the point across: there are gaps to fill, and we’ll be filling them the best we can.
The tentative schedule for Venerance: Sigma Octanus IV is to have development finished by the end of Summer, but no release date is being given as these things take time.
You can follow the mod at http://venerance.net/ as well as on the CryDev Project Page and, of course, right here on FPS General!
