For those uninitiated, DayZ and The War Z are in-development Zombie MMOFPS titles for PC, both fervently anticipated. In the case of DayZ, which is in Alpha currently, the game already has a massive fanbase of over 950,000 players. So, where exactly did these games come from and what is a Zombie MMO FPS anyways? Well, let’s break it down.
Let’s start with DayZ, shall we?
DayZ is a mod for the less-than-popular game made by Bohemia Interactive Studio, ArmA II, which came out in June of 2009. ArmA II is a military simulation game and a direct sequel to Operation Flashpoint. The DayZ mod was made by Bohemia employee, Dean “Rocket” Hall, who actually came up with the idea while in the New Zealand Armed Forces and felt like gaming needed a more emotional perspective, one where you could form an attachment to those around you and to your situation, with the added tension and thrill of fear of death, of course.
As “Rocket” worked on DayZ which is a mod of ArmA II and its engine, Real Virtuality, and eventually released it to the public, the game has had a consistent stream of updates, patches, and feature additions. As for the user base, it started off relatively slow and, more recently, began skyrocketing after a large series of reviews, high praise, and a flood of social media excitement.
The War Z’s past is a little more vague, as we know very little about the game at the moment except for the fact that the it is being developed by Hammerpoint Interactive and funded by Arktos Interactive. Both are a powerhouse of developers from extremely popular games, and will be using Arktos’s own Eclipse game engine. The War Z has reportedly been in design for over 2 years, and only recently taken shape and began developing specific features within the last year.

Back story aside, both games have heavy FPS elements and feature zombies as a main driving story element. Now, that’s all fine and good you say, it’s been done a million times before. But this is where it gets tricky, since both games are striving to be at least a semi-persistent if not fully persistent MMO on top.
Obviously, comparing DayZ in it’s current state of over 950,000 players to The War Z, just an announced game with no trailer or real gameplay yet, has it’s comparable limits, but as a DayZ veteran and an avid FPS player, I hope to enlighten those interested in the future of either or both titles.
