We've known that Bungie Studios is working on a brand new IP, set to be published by Activision as part of their 10-year contract. Aside from the fact that it would be a science fiction franchise, we knew virtually nothing about the project.
Yesterday, that all changed.
Thanks to a healthy leak on IGN and other sources, we now know quite a bit about the game, which is currently called Destiny. As to whether or not this is a working title or the final name, we're unsure. The leak contained some basic information on the story as well as a handful of concept art pieces, some of which Bungie has confirmed as authentic - including the piece of concept art at the top of this post.
So, what is Destiny about?
The leak contained a snippet of plot detail, presumably drafted up for press releases and the like. We're unsure how much of this information is subject to change, so take it with a grain of salt:
Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City.
We are young ‘knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and – eventually – overcoming it.
It looks like Bungie is striving to make Destiny a bit more accessible than Halo, appealing to a broader audience rather than the (very large) niche that Halo players typically represent. The studio has said that Destiny is 'designed for your inner 7 year old' while remaining 'fun and accessible to all'.
For their part, Bungie is embracing the leak as an inevitability of this industry. In a post on Bungie.net, the team said:
Go ahead. Take a peek. It’s alright. We weren't quite ready, but we will be soon, and we can’t wait to finally show you what we've really been up to.
Stick around, we haven’t even started yet.
