These Are Our Top 3 Most-Anticipated PlayStation 4 Shooters

There are a good deal of things that we don't know about the PlayStation 4 but from what we do know, this is going to be a beast among consoles. The reveal event for the console promised more power, a better online experience than what PlayStation Network currently offers and the capability for some truly gorgeous games.

But you know us, we're all about shooters. First-person, doesn't really make a difference. So, naturally when I heard about the PlayStation 4, I started getting excited for a new breed of console shooters.

There are a few promising shooters coming to the PlayStation 4 that we know of already, but not all games are created equal. Without further ado, here are my Top 3 Most-Anticipated PlayStation 4 Shooters!

Note: this is the first edition of our list, as more games are announced for the upcoming next-gen console, we will release an update to this list. Like any good first edition, this one will be worth hundreds of millions of dollars in the future.

#3 - Killzone: Shadow Fall

There haven't been too many shooters announced for the PlayStation 4, about a half dozen by my count, but they are all such exciting games that it seems a shame that Killzone: Shadow Fall is at the bottom of this list. Don't let this placement make you think that I'm not excited for Shadow Fall, because I most definitely am.

Why Am I Excited?

Guerrilla Games defined first-person shooters for the PlayStation generation for me with the Killzone franchise, a series that literally got better with every consecutive release.

The PlayStation 3 era in shooters will be forever remembered by me as being personified by Killzone 3.

The moment that the opening notes of Joris De Man's achingly beautiful them - 'And Ever We Fight On' - hit my ears and the intro sequence in Killzone 3 began to roll is one that I will not be forgetting anytime soon.

It is fitting, then, that Killzone: Shadow Fall was one of the very first games revealed at the PlayStation 4 announcement event earlier this year.

Shadow Fall takes place 30 years after the events of Killzone 3. The Helghast and Vektans now live together in one city, separated by a sprawling Berlin-esque wall. As you can imagine, tensions are high in the city as things begin to heat up.

You play as a Shadow Marshall, tasked with maintaining the tentative balance between the two factions; a task that promises to become more challenging as the conflict comes to a head.

#2 - Watch Dogs

It was exceedingly difficult keeping Watch Dogs out of the #1 slot, but I'm confident in this decision. Watch Dogs is more than deserving of the #1 place, but in my humble opinion, there is an even more worthy entry on this list, as you will see later. But first, Watch Dogs.

Why Am I Excited?

This is a game that already made FPS General's Top 5 Most Anticipated Shooters of 2013 list, so it kind of makes sense that it would crop up on this list, doesn't it?

Here is a game that aims to not only redefine the third-person open-world genre, but gaming in general.

The sheer power that protagonist Aiden Pearce has at his fingertips is intoxicating, and the game world that Ubisoft is developing is so open and reactive to this technology that Watch Dogs promises to deliver hundreds of hours of replay value as you choose different gameplay options. Re-route a train to make your escape or manipulate the traffic lights, causing a multi-car pileup to serve as a distraction as you vanish?

Watch Dogs takes place in the future, set in the city of Chicago. The entire city is connected via a supercomputer known as the Central Operating System or CtOS. Much to the dismay of Chicago's law enforcement officials, Aiden Pearce has cracked into the system giving him full access to everything that the supercomputer powers, which is...everything.

ATM machines, traffic lights, trains and a full database on the cities citizens are all at Aidens - and the players - fingertips.

Gameplay-wise, Watch Dogs is a third-person game and features cover mechanics and other gameplay elements familiar to the third-person shooter genre.

#1 - Destiny

When I set out to make this list, I started by assembling a tentative group of shooters coming to the PlayStation 4. I spent a little bit juggling them about until I arrived at something I could proudly call a Top 3 List. The debate on which game should take the top slot lasted all of two seconds before I settled on Destiny, it's really a no-brainer and here's why.

Why Am I Excited?

Bungie Studios singlehandedly created the Halo franchise and incredible community that surrounds it. From scratch. From the ground up.

Now they're aiming to do it again with a brand new franchise with their first release post-Halo, Destiny.

That is literally enough of a reason to put Destiny at #1 on this list; the simple premise that the greatest pioneer in console shooters are working on an entirely new franchise with no built-in expectations  As much as I love Halo, I am of the mind that it was time for Bungie to move on to something new. Something fresh. Halo is a great franchise, but it's been a great franchise for a long time without very many major innovations.

Destiny is a clean slate. A blank page upon which Bungie can pen the next great chapter in console shooters.

The story takes place in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic environment set several hundred years in the future. Humans had begun to spread out across the galaxy before the world was ravaged by an event known as The Collapse.

After that catastrophic event, all known survivors are living on Earth, their salvation delivered by a massive sphere in the sky known as The Traveler. Nobody really knows what it is, but as it hovers over the last human city, everyone understands that they owe their very existence to this celestial body.

In Destiny, the player steps into the shoes of a Guardian of the City, tasked with defending humanity from the newly discovered hostile alien species that seek our destruction.

Destiny stands as one of the most promising new franchises today, and with the 10 year publishing deal with Activision that Bungie entered into, we know that there will be a lot of fresh content in the years to come.

So, there you have it. Those are my Top 3 Most-Anticipated PlayStation 4 Shooters, but this is just one author's list. What are yours?

Some notable games that missed out on this list include Blacklight: Retribution, Battlefield 4 and Primal Carnage: Genesis.

Share your list with us in the comments below, we'd love to hear what you are looking forward to playing on the PlayStation 4 later this year! As mentioned before, we will release another version of this list should more exciting shooters be announced between now and the PlayStation 4 release date.
