Spec Ops: The Line

Hands On With Spec Ops: The Line's Playable Demo

2K Games and Yager launched the playable demo of their upcoming third-person shooter Spec Ops: The Line yesterday on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

The game takes place in Dubai and this demo gives players a chance to play through two chapters that they will encounter early on in the game. The overarching story is that Colonel John Konrad and his squad are missing so Captain Walker - the player character - and his squad must go in and try to extract them if possible.

The Dubai setting lends itself to dynamic sandstorms that players will have to play through in both singleplayer and multiplayer, although they don't play too heavily into the demo. Walker is expertly voiced by the talented Nolan North, most famous for his role as Nathan Drake from Naughty Dog's Uncharted franchise or perhaps as Desmond Miles, the protagonist in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise. North's talents are only one aspect of the excellent sound design and music in Spec Ops: The Line.

The chemistry between Walker and his squad of two other soldiers is great. It can be light at times, with Lugo cracking jokes here and there, but overall they felt like a tight, cohesive unit. Walker is able to give them basic squad commands including tagging targets for the squad to focus fire on. If painting a target a long distance away, one of the squadmates will use a long-range rifle to take them out. You can also instruct your squad to stun enemies which is pivotal at one point when you're pinned down from mounted gun fire.

During the demo, we get a chance to see some of the cinematic experience that Yager has built in Spec Ops: The Line and we really like the direction that it's heading. Spec Ops: The Line feels like a serious game on the very serious topic of war. The writing, cinematography and directing really put you into the experience, fighting to rescue fallen allies in a hostile, foreign environment.

We had a blast playing the demo for Spec Ops: The Line and we're looking forward to getting our hands on the full game and its multiplayer component on June 26th!
