Activision and AMC sent out a press release providing some more information on the upcoming first-person shooter adaptation of the latter's popular television program The Walking Dead.
Up until now, our knowledge was limited to the fact that the game followed the story of Daryl Dixon as he makes his way to Atlanta with his brother. The game very closely follows the AMC series, and the staff at Terminal Reality are self-professed fans of the show. The walkers (Walking Dead's commonly used term for a Zombie) in the game will use a combination of smell, sound and sight to relentlessly hunt down Daryl and Merle.
Much like the recently-released ARMA II mod, DayZ, players in The Walking Dead will have to ration their supplies and keep a weathered eye out for food, medical supplies and ammunition. Other supplies will also need to be foraged if Daryl expects to survive for long on the way to Atlanta. During the trip, Daryl will encounter many characters who can help you or hurt you dependent entirely on your choices in the game. Player choice seems to play heavily into The Walking Dead, as you are also able to choose whether to stealthily avoid the undead or stand and fight.
"The work AMC has done with the TV series has been amazing and we're ecstatic at the opportunity to be brought into the fold," said Drew Haworth, Creative Director at Terminal Reality in Activision's press release. "The studio is made up of fans of the show, and we think other fans will see that the situations and walkers featured in our game are every bit as gruesome and shocking as they are in the TV series — they look, move and react as expected with full authenticity — and they will surprise you. The player's fight-or-flight survival instinct is constantly engaged. 'Flight' is usually a good bet."
The Walking Dead is slated for a 2013 release and will hit Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. More information will be revealed in the coming months so be sure to stay tuned to FPS General as we continue coverage on the game.
