DayZ is about surviving, about building yourself a life and a future from essentially nothing - knowing that every passing minute may be your last and that a single bullet may bring your whole world crashing down, for good.

An Apology to George

After applying the DayZ mod to ARMA, I sat, waiting with baited breath, the loading screen staring at me for what seemed like hours as I toyed nervously with the mouse.

Suddenly the black screen comes to life, the ticker in the bottom corner of my screen types out the words “three valleys”, then disappears, leaving me alone with a torch, a bandage and a mass of open space.

I Murder Because I'm Scared

I never wanted to become like this.

Yesterday, I finally decided to make the dangerous journey to loot Northwestern airfield. I made it all the way around from the West, to the barracks on the eastern side of the pavement. All ghillied up, I hastily go through every room, finding an M16 with M203 attached.

I put the M16 in my backpack and drop a few bloodpacks and an extra ghillie suit.

As I finish looting, I hear shots. I can hear a revolver and an AK-74 going off at the same time. They are close. I look through the window to west from where the shots came from. I see nobody. I decide to leg it. I sprint through the front door into the trees and hide. I observe for a while, more shots. They keep coming closer...

Zombies in the Distance

I didn't know what to expect when I fired up DayZ for the first time. I had been dragging my feet on picking up ARMA II: Combined Operations for a few weeks. "Just wait a week," I would tell myself, "The game is guaranteed to go on sale during the Steam Summer Sale and you'll regret spending this money!" The Steam Summer Sale was surely going to start in the next few weeks, and ARMA II would undoubtedly go on sale. Should I just wait and save my money or would the allure of DayZ too much to resist?

Turns out the allure was too much. I caved in, spent the money and haven't looked back since.
