Third-person shooters can be a blast when executed properly like Gears of War or Mass Effect, but for their upcoming TPS Mercenary Ops, Yingpei Games wanted to change things up a bit.
"In a third-person shooter, the online multiplayer aspect of the game always seems to be an after-thought to the single-player experience," says Producer Jason Sharp. "Because of this, we decided to concentrate on creating an entirely different online experience by looking at every facet of game design from that perspective. This decision resulted in a unique style of play that enhanced traditional tactical combat by requiring players to have a quicker, more aggressive attitude.”
Mercenary Ops implements an intuitive cover system, allowing players to plan their tactics utilizing the environment for protection from enemy bullets. The game also features an active reload system, similar to Gears of War, that rewards players for timing their reload properly. After these familiar systems, however, Mercenary Ops starts to branch away from the norms, introducing destructible cover, an 'encumbrance system' and deep customization when creating and progressing your character.
As for game modes, Mercenary Ops features both competitive multiplayer where players face off in five different game modes and a co-op mode, where teams of up to 8 players join up to AI-controlled enemies and mini-bosses in a survival-based mode.
