  • Here's Why Nobody Is Reviewing The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

    • By NateRios 3/19/2013 8:24:02 PM

    'Reviews are that way, Daryl.'

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct hit shelves today, and yet you would be hard pressed to find very many reviews of the game. The ones you do find are likely from untested blogs struggling to make a name for themselves. What about the 'big names' in games journalism, where are the Kotaku reviews or the Joystiq pieces on Survival Instinct? What about Destructoid or IGN?

Most of these blogs have not put up a whole lot of content on The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct and we're pretty sure we know why.

The answer comes in two parts:

    The Stigma

Last year, Telltale Games released a point-and-click game based on The Walking Dead comic books. While the genre may have faded out over the years, it is absolutely perfect for what Telltale was trying to do with their version of The Walking Dead. Robert Kirkman, the comic book creator, worked closely with Telltale and oversaw story development on the game. Telltale's game was a massive hit, lauding nothing but amazingly good press and reviews and taking home dozens of gaming awards and honors.

When The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct was announced, it already had a stigma surrounding it. This was that other Walking Dead game. You know, not the one that Telltale did. This one is made by Activision, it's a shooter.

Survival Instinct may be the best game released this year for all we know, but the fact of the matter is that, to many people, this game is already associated as the lesser version of its more well-known and already established cousin. With Season Two of Telltale's series coming out, most of The Walking Dead community is hyped up for that and a lot of them had no idea that a shooter was even being produced.

  • Celebrate The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct With a Launch Trailer

    • By NateRios 3/18/2013 6:00:47 PM
    • Category IconThe Walking Dead

Celebrate the launch of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct with the official launch trailer, released just this morning in advance of tomorrow's big release day for the game.

Terminal Reality has been hard at work on Survival Instinct and we're excited to finally see what they've cooked up. The game tells the story of Merle and Daryl Dixon, the latter of which is controlled by the player. Heading across the Georgia countryside, the brothers will be in a nearly-constant fight for their lives as they hope to reach the safety of Atlanta. This game serves as a prequel to the AMC series and focuses on the early days of the zombie outbreak, prior to the events of the show.

AMC stars Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker take up their roles in Survival Instinct, respectively, as Daryl and Merle Dixon.

Check out the trailer above and stick with FPSGeneral.com all week as we continue to bring you launch week coverage of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

  • Daryl & Merle Dixon Star in The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct's Latest Trailer

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct launches later this month and the hype train is moving full-speed. Full speed for an undead Walker, that is. We're not sure if the game is just really bad or if Activision is focusing all of their efforts on other properties, but we wouldn't blame you for not knowing that the game is releasing in 4 days.

At any rate, Merle and Derle Dixon (watch the video) know the game is releasing in four days and the proof is in the trailer that you can watch at the bottom of this post. This is the part of the post where I would normally go on, at length, about the game but we really just don't know much about it at this point and from what we've seen, it looks...like it's not The Walking Dead by Telltale Games.

Either way, check out the video after the break. It is neat to see Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker talking about the game. The actors seem genuinely thrilled to be a part of the game, which is pretty awesome and makes us hopeful that the game is more than a cheesy tie-in. More often than not, these licensed games are little more than a way to make bags of cash for the publisher and license holder.

For what it's worth, Activision was the publisher behind the licensed Transformers games by High Moon Studios and all of those games are thoroughly enjoyable. Time will tell.

  • Here's The Actual Official Trailer for The Walking Dead FPS

    • By NateRios 2/7/2013 6:57:24 PM

Last month, we received what was purported to be the first official trailer for The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, the first-person shooter based on AMC's popular TV series. Well, yeah, that wasn't official at all it turns out. But this one definitely is.

Seriously, cross our hearts and hope to be ripped to pieces and eaten by Walkers if we're lying.

The trailer has a little gameplay, but it's mostly cinematic-type shots of Walkers with some dialogue from Daryl and Merle Dixon. Daryl is preparing to leave for Georgia, hoping to find a safe haven in the south and Merle is coming with him, regardless of the dangers that await them. We don't see too much of the Dixon brothers, but they are featured in a couple scenes towards the end of the trailer.

Check it out below and stay tuned for more on The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct which releases on March 19th, 2013 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii U.

  • Daryl and Merle Dixon Want You To Buy The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

Activision and Terminal Reality have announced that their upcoming first-person shooter, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, will be releasing on March 29th, 2013 on PlayStation, PC,  Xbox 360 and, surprisingly, Wii U. Anyone can announce a game's release date, but how many of those games are announced by Daryl Dixon and his brother Merle?

Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker, two of the stars of AMC's The Walking Dead, have already signed on to be a part of Terminal Reality's upcoming shooter, doing the voice work for their respective characters, and now they're even doing trailers! By our count, there is roughly 0:00 seconds of in-game footage in the trailer, but if Daryl Dixon tells you that his game is coming out on March 29th, you listen to him.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will follow the story of the aforementioned Dixon brothers, as they make their way to the fabled safety of Atlanta as the world around them is consumed by death and chaos. Check out the trailer below and visit http://www.thewalkingdeadbegins.com/ for more information on the game.

  • Update: The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct 'Official' Trailer Was Fan Made

    • By NateRios 1/3/2013 7:35:34 PM
    • Category IconThe Walking Dead
    • 0

Update: Earlier this week, we posted a story on a brand new trailer that was released for The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. As it turns out, the trailer was not official at all but rather a fan made concoction brewed up with bits and pieces of gameplay from an IGN show. The original article has been corrected below, and thank you to Kotaku for the correction.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct was first announced over the summer, but today marks the first time we've actually been able to see the game in action. Terminal Reality has released a brand new trailer, showing some actual gameplay from their upcoming first-person shooter.

If you haven't been following along, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct follows the story of Daryl and Merle Dixon, two of the characters from AMC's hit Walking Dead series. Whereas Telltale Games' acclaimed series based on The Walking Dead followed the events in the comic book series, Terminal Reality is focusing on the AMC show itself. This key difference is important to us, as it really shows that there is a market for both games (which really couldn't be any different, when you look at them).

The trailer looks to show off some stealth aspects of the game, as you can see the player character sneaking past zombies in several scenes, rather than taking them head on. At other times, however, they are being engaged directly with melee weapons and we even get a glimpse of what appears to be a shotgun in the hands of the player. Terminal Reality hasn't spilled the beans on all of the weapons that will be available to players in the game, or how those weapons are going to be acquired, but it seems to have an open-world feel to it in the trailer. Just how big that world is remains to be seen, but we're glad to be getting some gameplay.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think! To the Walking Dead faithful out there, how do you feel about this upcoming first-person shooter?

  • Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker Sign on to The Walking Dead FPS

    • By NateRios 11/30/2012 5:13:26 PM

Activision has announced that actors Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker have signed on to bring their talents to The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, currently in-development at Terminal Reality.

The actors, who play Daryl and Merle Dixon respectively, will be taking up their roles from The Walking Dead AMC series in Activision's upcoming survival game. The story in the game takes place before the events of the AMC series and follows Daryl and his brother Merle as they make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta. Rather than being based on the graphic novel series, Terminal Reality are building their game around the universe of The Walking Dead TV series.

Bringing in Reedus and Rooker was important to Terminal Reality, as they strive to deliver 'an engrossing, original experience that stays authentic to the characters, tone and storyline' of The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is set to release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2013. Stay tuned to FPS General for more information as it comes in. • More Info Surfaces on Terminal Reality's The Walking Dead

    • By NateRios 7/11/2012 6:32:14 PM

    • 0

Activision and AMC sent out a press release providing some more information on the upcoming first-person shooter adaptation of the latter's popular television program The Walking Dead.

Up until now, our knowledge was limited to the fact that the game followed the story of Daryl Dixon as he makes his way to Atlanta with his brother. The game very closely follows the AMC series, and the staff at Terminal Reality are self-professed fans of the show. The walkers (Walking Dead's commonly used term for a Zombie) in the game will use a combination of smell, sound and sight to relentlessly hunt down Daryl and Merle.

Much like the recently-released ARMA II mod, DayZ, players in The Walking Dead will have to ration their supplies and keep a weathered eye out for food, medical supplies and ammunition. Other supplies will also need to be foraged if Daryl expects to survive for long on the way to Atlanta. During the trip, Daryl will encounter many characters who can help you or hurt you dependent entirely on your choices in the game. Player choice seems to play heavily into The Walking Dead, as you are also able to choose whether to stealthily avoid the undead or stand and fight.

  • First 100 Walking Dead Pre-Orders at SDCC Get a Necklace of Zombie Ears

Attendees of this year's San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) are in for a disgusting treat if they drop by The Walking Dead booth at the event and pre-order the upcoming first-person shooter.

The necklace, based on the one that Daryl made in the hit AMC series of the same name, is only available at SDCC and only for the first 100 pre-orders made at the Walking Dead booth. This is a very limited edition pre-order bonus, so if you're thinking about getting The Walking Dead and you're going to hit SDCC, you definitely might want to drop by Activision's Walking Dead booth. It is booth #5344, if you're interested.

Check out the ear necklace above and drop by http://www.thewalkingdeadbegins.com/ for more on the upcoming game.

  • The Walking Dead Gets Reanimated as a First-Person Shooter

    • By NateRios 7/6/2012 8:17:17 PM

Activision has teamed up with AMC Studios and Terminal Reality to turn AMC's popular TV show The Walking Dead into a video game of the same name. A different video game of the same name, that is.

While Telltale Games already turned the show into an excellent adventure game, Activision is taking the property into more familiar grounds as a first-person shooter. Not much has been revealed about the game, but we know that it will be based around the TV program rather than the comic book series that in turn inspired the TV show. The story in the game follows Daryl Dixon who is traveling to Atlanta with his brother Merle. The two will have to avoid or destroy any zombies they encounter along the way, apparently while managing meager resources.

The Walking Dead sure has some major potential, doesn't it? The majority of popular zombie games follow the "4 survivors in a closed map" formula, but perhaps the journey to Atlanta will bring something fresh!
