Epic Games' game engine - the Unreal Engine - is one of the most widely used engines, and for good reason. Up there with the likes of Frostbite, Source and CryEngine; Unreal Engine is a formidable game engine, capable of amazing things.
This week, images surfaced online from a tech demo that few lucky press members were able to sit in on, showing what we can expect when developers start utilizing the next iteration of the game engine; Unreal Engine 4. Now, Unreal Engine is not limited to shooters so this news isn't exclusive to our community but with some of the most iconic shooters making use of Unreal Engine (most notably Unreal Tournament), it is worth getting excited over.
“There is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of our engine team and our studio to drag this industry into the next generation,” said Cliff Bleszinski, Epic’s design director. “It is up to Epic, and Tim Sweeney in particular, to motivate Sony and Microsoft not to phone in what these next consoles are going to be. It needs to be a quantum leap. They need to damn near render Avatar in real time, because I want it and gamers want it—even if they don’t know they want it.”
